O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early part of 2005, when she was still a high-school student. The judges loved her voice and she made it to the Top 100 round. O'Neil received high praise from the jury. She was however a complete loser in both the top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. Judges were amazed by her performance, and suggested viewers choose singers who were well-known and had a strong voice, like Melissa. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she never placed in the lower three ever again. She was the judge. Werner said, following two more stunning performances that O'Neil was going to be the winner in her Canadian Idol competition, as she would be the first woman and the youngest contestant in history, following the September 7, 2005 finals. O'Neil was immediately contacted from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
